The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has stated that it will screen and “disinfect” all new and prospective members, including political heavyweights such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Speaking on the party’s stance, SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, emphasized that this measure is necessary to prevent “contamination” from the political culture of their former parties.

“If you want to join the SDP, you must allow us to apply disinfectant—not out of disrespect, but because you are coming from a highly infected zone,” Adebayo stated.

He likened the process to COVID-19 safety measures, arguing that the party’s constitution is “well-sanitized” and structured to avoid criminality, bribery, excessive monetization of politics, ethnicity, and religious bias.

Adebayo acknowledged the challenges faced by these politicians in their former parties but stressed that anyone joining SDP must leave behind past grievances and align with the party’s people-centered ideology.

“Registration for membership is done at the ward level, and every new member must adhere to our constitution,” he added.

The statement comes amid growing speculation that some prominent politicians may be considering a move to the SDP ahead of the next general elections.
