Mrs. Dorcas Adeyinka, a United Kingdom-based Nigerian entrepreneur and Managing Director of the Dorcas Adeyinka Empowerment Foundation, has publicly demanded an official retraction from the Nigeria Police Force over what she described as false, defamatory, and malicious allegations linking her to the death of a foundation beneficiary, Mrs. Folusho (popularly known as Iya Ibeji), who passed away on April 9, 2024.
In a statement issued on Monday, Adeyinka described the “WANTED” notice published by the police on May 12, 2024, as both unjustified and damaging, insisting that no credible evidence exists to support any of the claims against her.
No Personal Ties to Deceased
Adeyinka clarified that she never met the deceased in person, and only knew her through her foundation’s charity program. According to her, Iya Ibeji was a monthly beneficiary, receiving ₦80,000 worth of food items and ₦20,000 in cash from the foundation.
Following the woman’s death, an official autopsy reportedly confirmed that the cause was natural—linked to tuberculosis. Despite this, the philanthropist claims she became the target of false online accusations and coordinated defamation.
“Contrary to online speculation, I had no personal relationship with the deceased. Her death was unfortunate, but I had no involvement. The allegations against me are not only fabricated but designed to destroy my reputation and philanthropic work,” she stated.
Alleged Abuse of Police Powers
Adeyinka further alleged that the situation escalated into a campaign of harassment by certain elements within the Nigeria Police Force, particularly individuals she claims are affiliated with ACP Muyiwa Adejobi.
“The same day the ‘wanted’ notice was published, I had already voluntarily presented myself with evidence and documentation disproving the allegations. Still, my image was released, falsely associating me with murder, cyberbullying, and extortion,” she explained.
She also expressed concerns over the abuse of state institutions, including the Nigerian Police National Cyber Center (NCC), allegedly used to torment her on personal grounds.
“I am convinced the Inspector-General of Police is unaware of this abuse of office. This press statement serves as a direct appeal to his office to urgently investigate and correct these wrongs,” Adeyinka said.
Calls for Accountability and Due Process
In her statement, Adeyinka called for:
-
A public retraction and apology from the Nigeria Police Force;
-
The prosecution of individuals behind what she calls “malicious petitions”;
-
An unbiased and transparent court process;
-
And that any further investigations should be handled by a neutral police unit, excluding officers allegedly affiliated with ACP Adejobi.
“Justice must prevail. I remain open to any fair investigation and demand accountability for those who have tried to weaponise the Nigerian legal system to intimidate and disgrace me,” she said.
Ongoing Commitment to Humanitarian Work
Despite the controversy, Adeyinka reaffirmed her dedication to charitable causes through the Dorcas Adeyinka Empowerment Foundation, which focuses on empowering women, feeding the underprivileged, and supporting community development.
“I remain committed to truth, integrity, and service to humanity. This incident, though unfortunate, will not derail my mission to improve lives,” she concluded.
