RCCG Brings Robotic Surgery to Nigeria, Targets Medical Tourism

Nigerians seeking advanced surgical procedures abroad may soon have a major reason to stay home as the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), through its Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV), moves to introduce robotic surgery in Nigeria.

RHV has acquired two robotic surgery systems—one dedicated to clinical procedures and the other designed specifically for training medical professionals.

The new robotic surgery programme will cover a range of specialties, including urology, general surgery, gynaecology, colorectal, thoracic and hepatobiliary surgery.

Beyond providing treatment, RHV is also establishing a Robotic Academy aimed at developing the skills of Nigerian doctors and other healthcare professionals in robotic-assisted surgery. Training at the academy is expected to commence in October.

The initiative is being positioned as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, expand access to advanced medical procedures and reduce the country’s dependence on overseas treatment.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of RHV, some robotic surgical procedures could cost patients around five per cent of what similar treatments may cost in the United States or Europe, potentially making highly advanced care more affordable for Nigerians.

The introduction of robotic surgery could mark a significant step forward for Nigeria’s healthcare sector, particularly if the technology is made accessible to a wider population and supported by sustained investment in specialist training and infrastructure.

With medical tourism costing Nigerians billions of naira annually, the RCCG-backed initiative could offer a new pathway towards keeping more patients and medical spending within the country.

The success of the project, however, will ultimately depend on affordability, availability of trained specialists, quality of care and the long-term sustainability of the technology.

For a country battling healthcare infrastructure and specialist shortages, bringing cutting-edge surgery home is certainly a development worth watching.
