Osun at 35: Adeleke Vows to Heal Wounds, Unite State After Tough Election

The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has pledged to heal the wounds of the people, unite the state and promote equity and fairness as Osun marks its 35th anniversary.

Adeleke, in his anniversary address, acknowledged the pains, sacrifices and disruptions suffered by residents in the aftermath of the recent governorship election, including families who lost loved ones and those who sustained injuries.

He commended the people of the state for what he described as their steadfast commitment to democracy and the rule of law, despite what he characterised as prolonged provocation and violence.

According to the governor, Osun residents demonstrated remarkable courage by refusing to take the law into their own hands and instead choosing the ballot as the instrument for determining their political future.

He said the large turnout recorded during the election, despite what he described as a “reign of terror,” reflected the determination of the people to exercise and defend their democratic rights.

Adeleke declared that the recent governorship election represented one of the toughest tests of Osun’s identity and character since the creation of the state 35 years ago.

He maintained that the outcome and conduct of the people had demonstrated Osun’s reputation for courage, integrity and democratic consciousness, describing the state as a “shining light for democratic practice” in Nigeria.

The governor also paid tribute to the founding fathers of Osun State, saying their contributions had been honoured by the people’s commitment to democracy, good governance and the rule of law.

“As you have again conferred the leadership mandate on me under recent difficult circumstances, I promise to heal the wounds, unite the people and uphold equity and fairness,” Adeleke said.

He further assured residents that his administration would remain inclusive, responsive and open to criticism as it works to strengthen governance and accelerate the development of the state.

The governor expressed gratitude to the people for their resilience, sacrifices and continued commitment to the growth and development of Osun State over the past 35 years.
