The Vice-Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has pledged to resign from office if Nigeria fails to begin experiencing meaningful changes within one year of the party assuming power in 2027.

Amaechi made the declaration during an interview on AIT’s Democracy Today programme on Wednesday, where he outlined security, education and economic recovery as major priorities of a potential ADC administration.

The former Rivers State governor said tackling corruption would be central to addressing Nigeria’s challenges, arguing that public funds meant for critical sectors were being diverted into private pockets.

“We must deal with three things. We must deal with security; we must deal with education; we must deal with the economy. And to do all that, corruption will have to come down because there’s no money for anybody to steal,” Amaechi said.

He also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the petrol subsidy, questioning the benefits Nigerians had received from the policy.

Amaechi expressed concern over the level of poverty in the country, contrasting the economic hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians with the lavish spending he said he had witnessed at some social gatherings.

On the economy, he raised concerns about Nigeria’s dependence on imported finished goods, describing the situation as a reflection of the country’s economic difficulties.

The ADC vice-presidential candidate also referred to reports of Nigerians booing President Tinubu during his arrival at the Lagos International Airport, insisting that an ADC administration would work to change the country’s circumstances.

Reaffirming his commitment to accountability, Amaechi challenged Nigerians to hold him responsible if the country fails to record meaningful progress within the first year of an ADC government.

“This time, I will say it. If Nigeria does not begin to change one year after we’ve come to office, come to me, I will resign,” he declared.

His pledge comes amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition parties positioning themselves to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The one-year commitment places the performance of a potential ADC administration under a clearly stated public accountability test.
