An Ogun State monarch, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, has issued a stern warning to voters ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging them to scrutinise the accessibility and responsiveness of politicians before handing them their votes.

The Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State said voters should be wary of candidates who become unreachable once they secure political positions or begin seeking public office.

The monarch particularly frowned at politicians who routinely ignore telephone calls and messages from citizens, describing accessibility as an important test of accountability and a candidate’s relationship with the people.

According to him, politicians seeking the mandate of the people should not suddenly become inaccessible after winning elections, stressing that public office is a responsibility to the citizens and not a licence to shut them out.

Oba Akinyemi said voters should pay close attention to the attitude of candidates towards ordinary citizens before deciding who deserves their mandate in 2027.

«“We should not vote for any governorship candidates or politicians seeking governorship or any elective positions, no matter their social status, who do not pick up calls or respond to messages of the citizens they desire to lead.”»

The monarch’s warning comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with politicians across Ogun State positioning themselves for various elective offices.

He stressed that communication between political leaders and citizens is critical to building trust, maintaining accountability and addressing problems before they escalate.

He argued that a politician who cannot make himself available to the people seeking his attention while campaigning should be subjected to serious scrutiny before being entrusted with greater political authority.

The monarch also warned against the culture of politicians becoming accessible only during election campaigns, when they need votes, and disappearing after securing electoral victory.

He urged voters to look beyond political slogans, money, social status and campaign promises, and examine the conduct and accessibility of candidates seeking their mandate.

According to him, the 2027 election should provide an opportunity for citizens to demand greater accountability from those seeking public office.

He called on voters to ask critical questions about candidates’ records, accessibility, responsiveness and commitment to the people before casting their ballots.

The monarch maintained that elected officials ultimately derive their authority from the people and must therefore remain answerable to them.
