There is a brewing controversy over Atiku Abubakar’s running mate as report says Governor Wike is the favoured candidate The Press Nigeria reports.

For weeks since the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party – PDP, anxiety begun to mount over his running mate.

There were multiple speculations and several other names on the list, but The Press Nigeria understands that earlier today, a PDP panel nominated Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, as the running mate to Atiku Abubakar.

This is coming after The Press Nigeria learnt that the PDP panel comprising of both past and present governors alongside the members of the national working committee of the party insisted that Atiku’s running mate must be a present governor from the Southern part of the country.

The Press Nigeria reports that the panel nominated Wike in a meeting which held on Tuesday evening.

TPN learnt that the majority of members of the panel voted for Wike over the Akwa Ibom governor, as well as Ifeanyi Okowa, governor of Delta, who were also on the list for consideration.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed June 17 as the deadline for political parties to submit their list of candidates for — president, vice-president, senate and house of representatives — ahead of the 2023 general election, but some members of the PDP who spoke this newspaper strongly denied the news stating that the party is yet to arrive at a conclusion and as such, the information spreading in the news is false.
