Sex-For-Marks Scandal

A shocking sex-for-marks scandal has rocked Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Secondary School in Ojodu-Berger, Lagos State, with allegations that a Further Mathematics teacher, Mr. Egberongbe Adegbenga Toheeb, sexually abused at least 11 female students. The teacher, who was privately hired by the school’s principal, is accused of manipulating his victims under the guise of improving their academic performance.

According to victims’ testimonies, the abuse began when they were in Senior School 1. One victim recounted how Mr. Adegbenga offered to help her with her mathematics grades and promised favorable marks in exchange for sexual favors. Another victim described how he cornered her inside a classroom and attempted to assault her before she managed to escape. Multiple victims have shared their accounts, revealing a pattern of exploitation over the years.

The school management has been accused of attempting to cover up the scandal after the abuse came to light earlier this year. NYSC corps member Clement James, who served at the school and is also an alumnus, played a pivotal role in exposing the allegations. James reported the matter to various authorities, including the Education District VI, Lagos State Ministry of Education, and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA). Following his reports, the Ministry of Education’s Monitoring and Investigation Department arrested Mr. Adegbenga, and he was later handed over to the DSVA.

Despite the teacher’s arrest, the school’s management allegedly launched a smear campaign against James, banning him from the premises and spreading false accusations about him. On March 24, 2025, James returned to the school to retrieve his NYSC certificate and photographs with his students. Upon arrival, he was confronted by the school principal, who allegedly ordered staff to seize his phone and attempted to intimidate him into revealing his evidence. James reported being confined in a toilet by the principal and faced further threats from the school staff.

The case has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability. The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency confirmed that the case is still in court, with Mr. Adegbenga remanded in custody and granted bail with a condition of ₦300,000. The next court hearing is scheduled for April 22, 2025.
