With the 2027 general election approaching, the political battle for Aso Rock is gradually gathering momentum, but a major question confronting Nigeria’s opposition party is whether they have the unity, political strength and electoral strategy to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the polls.

The challenge appears even more daunting with 34 state governors reportedly backing the president’s re-election ambition, giving the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) a formidable political advantage ahead of the contest.

As political calculations intensify, attention is shifting to whether opposition parties can overcome internal divisions, forge a united front and present a credible alternative capable of challenging Tinubu’s hold on power.

Ultimately, the 2027 election may not be determined by the number of governors supporting the president alone, but by the ability of the opposition to mobilise voters, build strong alliances and translate public discontent into electoral victories.
