Africa Makes History with Official Launch of the African Space Agency
In a landmark moment for the continent, the African Space Agency (AfSA) was officially inaugurated on Sunday, 20th April 2025, during the NewSpace Africa Conference. The ceremony brought together dignitaries from across the globe, including ministers, ambassadors, and heads of leading space agencies, to celebrate Africa’s bold new chapter in the global space sector.
Delivering a historic address, Dr. Valanathan Munsami, former CEO of SANSA and Chair of the AU Space Working Group, emphasized Africa’s unique opportunity to lead the world in space innovation through unity, sustainable development, and a shared strategic vision.
The inauguration also featured goodwill messages from top officials of major space organizations, including representatives from the European Space Agency (ESA), NASA, UAE Space Agency, CNES (France), JAXA (Japan), UNOOSA, and the Italian Space Agency, all expressing strong international support for Africa’s space ambitions.
Heads of national space agencies from Gabon, Kenya, Nigeria, Angola, and Egypt highlighted regional commitments to advancing a collaborative space future. A major highlight of the event was the unveiling of the African Space Agency logo and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between AfSA and the European Space Agency, symbolized by ESA’s gift of a space-flown flag to AfSA.
High-level remarks were delivered by African ministers including H.E. Mário Augusto da Silva Oliveira (Angola), Dr. Badr Abdelatty (Egypt), and H.E. Mr. Moses Vilakati (African Union Commission), demonstrating the strong political support backing Africa’s space exploration goals.
The keynote address by H.E. Ayman Ashour, Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, representing Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, underscored the vital role of space science in Africa’s future development and the significance of Egypt hosting AfSA headquarters.
The inauguration, skillfully hosted by Dr. Temidayo Oniosun, Managing Director of Space in Africa, concluded with a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony, officially opening the doors of the African Space Agency.
This historic event cements Africa’s commitment to space sovereignty, continental collaboration, and positions AfSA as a cornerstone in the continent’s pursuit of scientific, technological, and innovation excellence.
