Coronation of 46th Alaafin: We’ll Continue to Follow Due Process in Governing Oyo — Gov. Makinde

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to due process, impartiality, and non-interference in the selection of traditional rulers across the state.

Speaking at the coronation ceremony of Oba Abdulakeem Abimbola Owoade I as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, held on Saturday at Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo, the governor emphasized the importance of tradition, justice, and credibility in governance.

Governor Makinde declared that the emergence of the new Alaafin reflects his administration’s consistent stand on fairness and transparency.

“Some individuals tried to influence the selection process, but the Oracle did not favor their candidates,” Makinde revealed. “What we are witnessing today is the will of the people and the decision of the Ifa oracle.”

He stressed that his conscience could not support any manipulation of the revered Alaafin stool, saying:

“When the first selection was brought to me and someone declared himself Alaafin-elect, I investigated and found out there were irregularities. I asked myself: Is the Alaafin’s stool for sale? And I answered no. I couldn’t defend that before my Maker.”

Makinde lauded the patience and resilience of Oyo indigenes, noting that the installation of Oba Owoade symbolizes a new dawn and the return of pride to the Oyo Kingdom.

He also urged the new monarch to prioritize unity and development, pledging continued government support, especially in promoting Oyo’s cultural and tourism assets — including the UNESCO-recognized World Sango Festival and the Old Oyo National Park.

On ongoing legal challenges surrounding the throne, the governor advised the litigants to accept the will of God:

“The people, the oracle, and the government are all aligned. Don’t waste your time in court. Let us embrace peace and progress.”

Alaafin Owoade: I Will Lead with Unity and Purpose

In his acceptance speech, Oba Abdulakeem Abimbola Owoade I expressed deep gratitude to Governor Makinde, the Oyomesi, and the people of Oyo for their support.

He pledged to serve with integrity and ensure collaboration among all communities for the prosperity of Oyo.

“Let us foster unity and shared responsibility to overcome challenges and grow our economy. The throne of our forefathers must be a beacon of progress,” he said.

The event drew a distinguished crowd of traditional rulers, government officials, diplomats, and cultural icons from across Nigeria and beyond. In attendance were:

• The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar

• The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi

• The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi

• The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III

• Diplomats from Portugal, Cuba, Brazil, and Spain

• Former Oyo Deputy Governors, National Assembly members, and captains of industry

Representatives from the Osun and Ondo State governments were also present, alongside Senator Monsurat Sunmonu and Senator Yunus Akintunde, who described the coronation as a historic event, marking the first Alaafin installation in 54 years.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, represented by Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Chief Ademola Ojo, described the coronation as a milestone moment for Oyo’s heritage.
