A retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Amina Adamu Augie, has warned that corruption among judges, lawyers and court officials is undermining the administration of justice in Nigeria and eroding public confidence in the judiciary.

Augie described the situation as a threat to the integrity of the legal system, warning that corruption was turning the courts into “market stalls” instead of the temples of justice they are expected to represent.

The retired jurist expressed concern that unethical practices within the legal profession could weaken the credibility of judicial institutions and undermine public trust in the rule of law.

She called for decisive action against erring practitioners, insisting that anyone found culpable of corruption should face appropriate sanctions, regardless of their status or seniority.

Augie’s remarks underscore growing concerns about accountability and professional ethics within Nigeria’s justice system, with renewed calls for stronger disciplinary mechanisms to protect the independence and integrity of the judiciary.

Her position highlights the importance of ensuring that courts remain impartial institutions where justice is determined by the law and evidence rather than financial inducements or personal influence.
