German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser is satisfied with the security operation for Euro 2024 after the completion of the group stage as she praised “a huge effort” from everyone involved.

“Security remains our top priority. The strong security measures are working, above all a very strong police presence at all match venues, at public viewing and in many other places,” Faeser told publishers Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.

“The police has intervened quickly and consistently against violence by hooligans, bottle throwing and pyrotechnics. However, the fact that police officers were also attacked shows how dangerous this operation can be.”

Faeser highlighted that 22,000 federal police officers were on Euros duty every day to protect Germany’s borders, airports and rail traffic, in addition to those from the federal states.

Faeser said the security authorities were constantly adapting their measures, and with the knock-outs now reached they “can be pooled even more because fewer matches are taking place on the same day.”

She also mentioned emergency services and fire brigades who are also on duty all the time, along with the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and its 3,400 volunteers.

“My greatest thanks and respect go to them all,” Faeser said.
