Former NNPCL Boss Denies EFCC Arrest, Says He’s Ready to Account for His Stewardship
Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has denied reports claiming he is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing them as false, mischievous, and harmful to national interest.
In a statement released amid growing public speculation, Kyari revealed that he had been overwhelmed with calls from concerned friends and family following a publication by an online newspaper alleging his arrest. He categorically dismissed the claim, calling it a calculated attempt to mislead and tarnish his reputation.
“This is clear mischief and a calculated attempt by the newspaper and its sponsors to achieve a desired outcome, which only them know,” he stated.
Kyari clarified that he is currently taking a well-deserved rest following the recent dissolution of the NNPCL management and board by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He noted that after 34 years of service, including nearly six years at the helm, he had barely taken time off and was grateful for the opportunity to serve the nation under both Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu.
Reflecting on his public service, Kyari emphasized his integrity and accountability, grounded in his personal faith and professional principles.
“I served not only my country but also God… knowing fully well as a Muslim that if I do not account before man, I will account before Allah,” he said, affirming his readiness to respond to all lawful inquiries about his tenure.
While welcoming scrutiny, Kyari warned against disinformation, stressing that such false reports could damage investor confidence and send the wrong signals to the international community. He called on the media to verify facts before publication and to exercise responsibility in the national interest.
He concluded by thanking those who reached out to him in concern, assuring them of his availability and willingness to engage with any legitimate inquiry.
