Four Dead, 13 Critically Injured as Truck Rams Fully Loaded Bus on Epe Bridge
Four people, including a commercial bus driver, have been killed, while 13 others sustained critical injuries after a truck rammed into a fully loaded commercial bus on Alaro City Bridge, inward T-Junction, Epe, Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), which confirmed the fatal collision, said the truck driver also suffered severe injuries, including the traumatic severance of both legs, which became trapped in the wreckage.
Preliminary accounts indicated that the crash occurred as both vehicles were navigating the single-lane bridge, with the truck violently colliding with the commercial bus in an impact that left several occupants trapped inside the mangled vehicles.
The collision claimed four lives at the scene, including that of the commercial bus driver, while 13 other occupants sustained critical injuries requiring urgent medical attention.
Following the incident, LASTMA operatives, working alongside personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), coordinated rescue and evacuation efforts to assist the victims and manage the situation.
The four deceased victims were evacuated to a mortuary, while the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) transported the 13 injured occupants to the nearest medical facility for emergency treatment.
Officers from the Epe Police Division also provided security support during the rescue operation, helping to maintain order and protect emergency responders at the scene.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as deeply distressing.
He sympathised with the bereaved families and wished the injured victims a speedy and complete recovery.
Bakare-Oki also called on motorists to exercise greater caution and comply with traffic regulations, particularly when driving on bridges, narrow roads and other sections where limited space increases the risk of serious collisions.
He stressed the importance of responsible driving, observing speed limits and maintaining safe distances between vehicles to prevent avoidable road crashes.
Meanwhile, LASTMA officials deployed to the affected corridor implemented traffic management measures to ease congestion caused by the accident and gradually restore normal vehicular movement.
The agency reiterated its commitment to road safety, the protection of human lives and effective collaboration with emergency services and security agencies in responding to road traffic incidents.
Motorists were urged to avoid dangerous manoeuvres, maintain safe following distances and exercise extreme caution when approaching narrow bridges and other traffic bottlenecks.
The crash has once again highlighted the potentially devastating consequences of road traffic collisions, particularly on restricted carriageways where a single driving error can result in multiple casualties.
LASTMA has not provided further details on the identities of the victims or the precise circumstances leading to the collision. The cause of the crash remains subject to further investigation.
