Francis Duru, the veteran Nigerian actor whose journey from a bus conductor to one of Nollywood’s recognised faces was shaped by resilience, talent and an enduring belief that “life is about donation, not duration,” has died at the age of 59 following a brief illness.

His reported death on Friday has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian entertainment industry, leaving fans, colleagues and younger actors he mentored mourning a performer whose career spanned decades.

Duru was born on July 27, 1967, contrary to some reports that put his birth year at 1969. In an interview about two months before his reported death, the actor recalled celebrating his 59th birthday on a movie set.

“Yes, I’m 59 years already. What is different about this age is that I celebrated this particular birthday inside the bush while on set, with agidi and pepper soup,” he said.

Reflecting on his life and career, Duru spoke about gratitude, mortality and the importance of appreciating every moment.

“Beyond that, you begin to look at life from a totally different perspective, and I look at life now from the point of gratitude,” he said.

He added that the deaths of friends and colleagues had made him reflect deeply on life, attributing his own journey to divine grace.

## From JAMB Setback to a Life in Acting

Before becoming a household name in Nollywood, Duru experienced the uncertainty that comes with waiting for admission into higher education.

Following his JAMB setback, he stayed with his uncle in Obigbo, Rivers State, where he assisted with the family transport business, working as an administrative assistant and bus conductor while awaiting admission.

What appeared to be a temporary phase eventually opened the door to a career that would define his life.

Duru’s introduction to acting came unexpectedly during a visit to a drama rehearsal in Port Harcourt. He had accompanied a friend to the rehearsal simply to pass the time when the actor scheduled to play a Calabar man failed to appear.

When those present asked who could convincingly speak like someone from Akwa Ibom, Duru volunteered.

That spontaneous decision earned him a role and marked the beginning of his acting journey, which he would later describe as a “divine process.”

From that first opportunity, Duru went on to feature in numerous films, demonstrating his versatility across different genres and establishing himself as a familiar face to generations of Nigerian movie lovers.

## A Legacy Beyond the Screen

Duru’s career was not defined solely by the characters he portrayed. His involvement in mentoring younger creatives also contributed to his place in the entertainment industry.

His reflections on life, gratitude and the inevitability of death offered a glimpse into the philosophy that guided him through his personal and professional journey.

For an actor who found his calling through an unexpected opportunity after an admission setback, his story stands as a reminder that life’s direction can change in moments when least expected.

His journey from the transport business in Rivers State to the movie industry illustrates how an unplanned opportunity can become a lifelong calling.

As tributes emerge following news of his death, Francis Duru will be remembered for his contribution to Nigerian cinema, his performances and the lives he touched throughout his career.
