Fresh attack in Faskari leaves several people injured and campaign vehicles destroyed, barely four days after violence disrupted the campaign’s flag-off rally in Funtua. Three affected LGAs are home to top Katsina government officials, raising questions about security and political tolerance.

The political atmosphere in Katsina State has come under renewed scrutiny following another attack on the Tinubu-Dikko Campaign convoy, this time in Faskari Local Government Area, where suspected angry youths reportedly smashed several vehicles and set others ablaze on Saturday.

Several people were also said to have sustained injuries during the attack, marking another troubling episode for the campaign barely four days after its flag-off rally in Funtua was disrupted by reported violence.

The latest incident has heightened concerns about the safety of political campaigns in the state, particularly as similar attacks were previously reported along campaign routes in Malumfashi town and parts of Kankara Local Government Area.

The recurrence of violence across the three local government areas has raised questions about the security arrangements for political activities and the circumstances behind the apparent hostility towards the campaign.

Three affected LGAs, three prominent government officials

Beyond the attacks themselves, an interesting geographical connection has drawn attention to the incidents.

The three local government areas where campaign-related violence has reportedly occurred are associated with prominent members of the Katsina State Government’s Executive Council.

The Governor’s Chief of Staff, Abdulkadir Nasir, hails from Malumfashi, while the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Garba, is from Faskari, where Saturday’s latest attack reportedly occurred.

Similarly, Deputy Governor Faruk Jobe is from Kankara, another local government area linked to earlier reports of attacks on campaign vehicles.

While these geographical connections do not establish any involvement by the government officials, they add another dimension to the unfolding political situation and make a thorough, impartial investigation particularly important.

The critical question is whether the repeated incidents reflect isolated acts of hostility by individuals or a broader breakdown of political tolerance and security in the affected communities.

Campaign Council calls for security intervention

In an earlier statement, the Tinubu-Dikko Campaign Council, through its Media Directorate, called on relevant security agencies to investigate the reported attacks, establish the circumstances surrounding them and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The council also urged political parties, their supporters and other stakeholders to exercise restraint, avoid inflammatory rhetoric and refrain from circulating unverified information capable of escalating tensions.

Its appeal underscores the need to prevent political disagreements from degenerating into violence, particularly as political mobilisation and campaign activities intensify.

Katsina faces test of political tolerance

The repeated reports of attacks within a short period have placed the security situation surrounding political activities in Katsina under the spotlight.

Beyond the destruction of campaign vehicles and injuries reportedly sustained by supporters, the incidents raise a fundamental question about whether political parties and their candidates can freely engage voters across the state without intimidation or violence.

Security agencies must move beyond routine condemnations and establish the facts surrounding each incident. Those responsible should be identified, irrespective of their political affiliations or perceived connections.

Equally important, political leaders across party lines must demonstrate restraint and discourage supporters from treating political opposition as an enemy.

Democracy cannot thrive where campaign convoys become targets of violence and political participation is determined by intimidation. Katsina’s political space must remain open to all parties, and the responsibility to protect that space rests with the government, security agencies and political stakeholders alike.
