Kemi Badenoch Breaks Silence After Tory Election Loss: “Sacking Me Won’t Fix the Party”
UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has dismissed calls for her removal following the party’s devastating performance in the May 1 local elections, insisting that leadership changes alone will not solve the party’s deep-rooted challenges.
Speaking to the BBC on Sunday, Badenoch acknowledged the party’s poor showing but warned against knee-jerk reactions. “Reform had a good night. We had a bad night. And what this shows for a lot of people who hoped that just changing leader again would fix everything is that that’s not going to be enough,” she said.
The local election results saw the Conservatives lose 674 council seats and control of 16 local authorities, while Nigel Farage’s Reform UK gained significant ground, winning 10 councils and 677 councillors—a shocking reversal for the ruling party.
Badenoch, who took over from Rishi Sunak in November 2024, only six months ago, urged her party to look beyond leadership changes and focus on rebuilding public trust through credible policies. “We tried that previously. And that brought us to a historic defeat,” she noted, referencing the Tories’ long-standing internal turmoil and leadership instability.
She reaffirmed her commitment to restoring the party’s relevance, but on honest terms: “We are going to come out with the policies that people want to see, but what we are not going to do is rush out and tell the public things that are not true just so we can win votes.”
Badenoch emphasised that her leadership is focused on long-term national interest rather than short-term political gains. “This is not about winning elections; this is about fixing our country. Yes, of course, you need to win elections to do that, but you also need a credible plan.”
Despite mounting pressure, Badenoch’s message signals a refusal to be ousted easily and a pivot towards policy integrity over political theatrics as the Tories brace for the upcoming general elections.
