Lagos Ranks 27th Among World’s Most Crime-Prone Cities, Scores 69.1 — Report
Lagos has been ranked the 27th most crime-prone city in the world, recording a crime index of 69.1 points and a safety index of 30.9 points in the 2026 Numbeo Crime Index.
The ranking places Nigeria’s commercial capital among 406 cities assessed globally, highlighting persistent concerns about urban security and residents’ safety.
With a crime index of 69.1, Lagos falls within the high-crime category under Numbeo’s classification, raising fresh questions about the effectiveness of security measures, law enforcement and crime-prevention strategies in Africa’s most populous urban centre.
The safety index of 30.9 further reflects the relatively low perception of safety among respondents contributing to the survey.
Numbeo’s Crime Index is based largely on user-contributed perceptions of crime and safety rather than official police crime statistics. It should therefore be interpreted as an indicator of public perception, not a direct measurement of recorded criminal incidents.
Nevertheless, the ranking puts renewed pressure on security agencies and the Lagos State Government to strengthen neighbourhood policing, improve emergency response and address criminal activities across the metropolis.
