Oba Lamidi-Osolo to Lead Nigerian Delegation on Historic Official Visit to Brazil
Royal Visit to Strengthen Nigeria-Brazil Ties, Promote Yoruba Heritage, Trade and Academic Cooperation
His Majesty, Oba Olusola Adebowale Lamidi-Osolo (Otenibotemole II), Olofin Adimula Oodua of Ado-Odo Kingdom, is set to lead a distinguished Nigerian delegation on a historic official visit to Brazil, marking a significant milestone in efforts to deepen cultural, diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and the South American nation.
The landmark visit, described as the first official visit of its kind by the monarch to Brazil, is expected to strengthen the longstanding ancestral connections between the Yoruba people and Brazil while opening new avenues for cooperation in trade, education, cultural preservation and municipal governance.
According to a press release issued by the royal delegation, all arrangements have been concluded for the visit, which will feature a series of high-level engagements with Brazilian government officials, academic institutions, cultural organisations and community leaders.
Speaking on the programme, the Chief Protocol Officer, Amb. Omoba Adesoji Talabi JP, described the visit as an important platform for international cooperation and strategic engagement.
He said the initiative would create opportunities for meaningful partnerships in trade and commerce, academic exchange, institutional development and the preservation of shared cultural heritage.
As part of the engagements, Oba Lamidi-Osolo is expected to meet with Secretaries of Culture, prominent cultural figures and District Mayors, known locally as *Prefeitos*, across selected host municipalities.
The meetings are expected to encourage direct partnerships between Nigerian and Brazilian cities, strengthen institutional relationships and promote mutually beneficial development initiatives.
### Royal Engagements and Cultural Programmes
Two major events are central to the monarch’s official itinerary.
**1. First Conference on Heritage and Black November**
His Majesty will serve as Guest of Honour, or *Patrono de Honra do Dia*, at the prestigious *1ª Conferência Sobre o Patrimônio & Novembro Negro*, organised by the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) in partnership with SEPAD.
The academic and cultural conference will feature scholarly discussions, musical and theatrical performances, documentary screenings and an awards ceremony.
It is expected to provide an important platform for discussions on African identity, historical connections, cultural preservation and the enduring influence of African traditions in Brazil.
**2. Royal Lunch with His Majesty**
The monarch will also be hosted at a special cultural reception, *Almoço Real com Sua Majestade*, organised by the Centro Cultural Omo Yoruba.
The gathering will bring together members of the Yoruba diaspora, community leaders and other distinguished personalities to celebrate Yoruba identity and reinforce cultural connections between Nigeria and Brazil.
Activities lined up for the event include traditional musical performances, documentary screenings and an interactive session during which participants will have the opportunity to engage directly with the royal guest.
The reception is expected to provide a platform for sharing knowledge about Yoruba history, traditional values and cultural practices with younger generations and members of the diaspora.
### Distinguished Nigerian and International Delegation
Joining the monarch on the historic visit are prominent cultural representatives and international delegates, including Eng. Edgar Alan Alcalá Peimbert, Director of Ohun Abalaye Atijo House of Ifá in Mexico; Marcio de Jagun; Carolina Maira Morais; Aare Olusegun Daramola; Ifadare Ayedun Owoduni; Ogunsanya Abisoye; Nasir Kazeem; and Oyesile Oladimeji, among other distinguished participants.
Their involvement underscores the international influence of Yoruba cultural heritage and the growing interest in strengthening relationships among traditional institutions, cultural organisations and diaspora communities across continents.
### Deepening the Nigeria-Brazil Historical Connection
The visit comes against the backdrop of centuries-old historical connections between Africa and South America, particularly the significant Yoruba cultural influence in Brazil.
The Yoruba presence in Brazil, shaped largely by the transatlantic slave trade and subsequent migration, remains visible in the country’s language, religion, music, festivals, cuisine and cultural traditions.
Today, Yoruba heritage continues to play an important role in Brazil’s Afro-Brazilian identity, particularly through traditional religious and cultural practices.
Beyond its ceremonial importance, the royal visit is expected to explore practical opportunities for economic development, educational partnerships, institutional collaboration and sustained cultural exchange.
Through engagements with universities, municipal authorities, cultural organisations and diaspora communities, the delegation hopes to establish stronger channels of cooperation between Nigeria and Brazil.
The visit also highlights the growing relevance of traditional institutions in international cultural diplomacy, demonstrating how royal institutions can serve as bridges between communities, promote historical understanding and create opportunities for meaningful international partnerships.
For Ado-Odo Kingdom and the wider Yoruba cultural community, the historic Brazilian engagement represents an opportunity to project Yoruba heritage onto the global stage while strengthening the bonds connecting the people of Nigeria with their descendants and cultural counterparts across the Atlantic.
