RCCG Assistant GO J.F. Odesola: The Pastor With Multiple Degrees, 150 Books and a Remarkable Ministry Journey

Pastor Johnson Funsho Odesola, an Assistant General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has attracted attention for his remarkable combination of scholarship, church leadership and gospel ministry.

Odesola, who oversees Personnel and Administration for the RCCG, is also Pastor-in-Charge of Region 1 and a member of the church’s Governing Council.

Born on June 5, 1959, and originally from Igbajo, Osun State, Odesola reportedly grew up in a sawmilling family where his father expected the boys to remain in the family business rather than pursue formal education.

However, inspired by an uncle, Folly, he developed an interest in engineering and pursued higher education despite the resistance he initially encountered.

His academic journey has since taken him through several disciplines, with qualifications spanning engineering, theology, Christian education, music, communication, law, cultural anthropology and business administration.

He is reported to hold National Diploma and Higher National Diploma qualifications in Technical and Building Engineering, alongside bachelor’s degrees in Christian Education, Theology and Musicology.

His postgraduate education includes master’s-level qualifications in Communication, Christian Education, Cultural Anthropology and Law, while his doctoral studies have covered areas including Theology, Christian Education, Business Administration, Law and Cultural Anthropology.

Beyond the classroom, Odesola has reportedly received numerous fellowships and international honours and has become a speaker at leadership and Christian conferences in different parts of the world.

From Campus Ministry To RCCG Leadership

Odesola’s journey into full-time ministry was not initially presented to RCCG General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, as a conventional career move.

According to Odesola, he approached Adeboye after developing a conviction that he should serve God through the church’s youth and campus ministry.

«“I told him that the Lord wanted me to serve Him in the Campus Fellowship already launched,” Odesola recalled.»

Adeboye reportedly directed him to work under Pastor Odeyemi, an Assistant General Overseer, and he was subsequently assigned responsibilities connected with the church’s campus outreach.

Odesola said his assignment later took him to Northern Nigeria, where the RCCG’s presence was still relatively limited.

“By the time I did one year, RCCG Churches in the North was one, and located in Kaduna, which controlled Kano and Jos,” he recalled.

He said Adeboye subsequently instructed him to move to the North, where his responsibilities expanded until the entire region was placed under his supervision.

More Than A Pastor

Odesola has also established himself as an author and gospel media personality.

He is credited with authoring more than 150 books and has been involved in gospel film production, further expanding his influence beyond the pulpit.

His profile has made him a notable figure within RCCG, particularly for the breadth of his academic interests and his involvement in administration, ministry, youth development and Christian education.

A Family Tied To RCCG’s Gospel Legacy

Odesola is married to Pastor Mrs Adebisi Odesola, and the couple have children.

His family also has notable links to prominent figures in Nigeria’s Pentecostal community.

His daughter, Titilope, is married to Leke Adeboye, son of RCCG General Overseer Pastor E.A. Adeboye, while his other daughter, Tolulope, is married to Joshua Mike-Bamiloye, son of gospel filmmaker and evangelist Mike Bamiloye.

With decades spent in ministry, extensive academic training and a long record of writing, leadership and gospel media work, Pastor J.F. Odesola has carved out a distinctive place within RCCG.

While claims describing him as “the most educated pastor in Nigeria” remain difficult to establish objectively without a comprehensive comparison of pastors nationwide, his reported academic credentials and multifaceted ministry career undoubtedly make him one of the country’s most academically accomplished Christian leaders.
