President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, following their historic 2-1 victory over Japan to win the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Saturday, November 7.

The President described the triumph as a moment of national pride, praising the young players for their courage, resilience, discipline and determination throughout the competition.

In a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said he received the news of the victory shortly after returning from political engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers states.

“What wonderful news to return home to! Our young girls have conquered the world and given Nigerians everywhere another reason to celebrate our great country,” the President said.

Tinubu commended the team for demonstrating the Nigerian spirit of perseverance and commitment, noting that their performance had brought honour to the country.

He recalled that the players had promised to win the tournament after defeating Brazil in the semi-finals, expressing satisfaction that they fulfilled their pledge by overcoming Japan in the final.

The President described the achievement as a landmark moment for African women’s football, adding that the victory would inspire millions of young Nigerian girls to pursue their dreams in sports and other fields.

He also congratulated the goalscorers, Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku, alongside their teammates and head coach, Akeem Busari.

Tinubu extended his appreciation to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the National Sports Commission and everyone who contributed to the team’s success.

The victory marks a significant achievement for Nigerian women’s football and further highlights the potential of young female athletes to compete successfully on the global stage.
