Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has accused politicians in Abuja of being unwilling to support the state’s long-standing demand for special status, citing its historical significance and contribution to Nigeria’s economy.

Sanwo-Olu made the remarks while speaking at the Financial Times Africa Summit in London at the weekend, where he discussed Lagos’ economic importance and its relationship with the Federal Government.

The governor acknowledged that the Federal Government had supported Lagos through infrastructure projects and policy reforms but argued that more needed to be done to address the state’s peculiar challenges.

According to him, Lagos deserves special recognition because of its unique position in Nigeria’s economic and historical development.

Sanwo-Olu’s comments have renewed attention on the demand for special status for Lagos, a proposal linked to the state’s strategic importance, population pressures and the demands placed on its infrastructure and public services.

The governor maintained that despite existing federal support, Lagos requires additional consideration to enable it to effectively manage its responsibilities and sustain its contribution to national development.
