Luxury SUV controversy exposes ruling party to fresh criticism over priorities as families struggle with food prices, hospitals battle inadequate facilities and millions endure economic hardship

The reported distribution of brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs, valued at between ₦140 million and ₦150 million each, to All Progressives Congress (APC) youth mobilisers has triggered fresh criticism of the ruling party, with questions mounting over its priorities as Nigerians grapple with hunger, rising living costs and worsening economic pressures.

The controversy, involving APC National Youth Leader Dayo Israel and competing interests within the party’s youth structure, has sparked debate over political patronage, internal power struggles and the apparent contrast between the privileges enjoyed by party loyalists and the hardships confronting ordinary citizens.

While millions of Nigerians struggle to afford food, pay rent, transport costs and medical bills, reports that luxury vehicles are being distributed to political mobilisers have raised questions about the message the ruling party is sending to a population repeatedly urged to endure economic difficulties.

The development has also intensified allegations of a growing division between Israel’s supporters and a faction associated with Seyi Tinubu, convener of the City Boy Movement, over the leadership of youth mobilisation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.

APC youth leaders embroiled in power struggle

The controversy reportedly began with disagreements over the appointment of a director for youth mobilisation in the APC’s 2027 presidential campaign structure.

According to accounts circulating in political circles, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu backed Israel for the position, despite an earlier announcement naming Minister of Youth Development Ayo Olawande for the role in a communication reportedly signed by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma.

Seyi Tinubu and associates were reportedly more comfortable with Olawande, who serves in his father’s administration and was considered by his supporters better positioned to coordinate youth mobilisation for the forthcoming election.

The reported intervention by the First Lady has fuelled speculation about competing centres of influence within the ruling party and the extent to which powerful political figures are shaping its campaign structure.

Although the full circumstances surrounding the appointments remain unclear, the disagreement has exposed questions about coordination, authority and loyalty within the APC’s youth wing at a critical stage in preparations for 2027.

Luxury vehicles amid widespread hardship

The controversy escalated after Israel reportedly announced the distribution of new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs to supporters and youth mobilisers across the 36 states.

The vehicles were said to be worth between ₦140 million and ₦150 million each, although the precise number distributed, their actual market value and the source of funding have not been independently verified.

Reports attributed the vehicles to the First Lady, but details about the financing arrangements and the circumstances of the distribution remain unclear.

The reported gifts have nevertheless drawn criticism because of the stark contrast between the luxury associated with political mobilisation and the economic difficulties facing millions of Nigerians.

Across the country, households continue to contend with expensive food, high transportation costs, rising rents and the pressure of meeting basic daily needs. For many families, buying essential groceries has become a difficult exercise in choosing between competing necessities.

The controversy has therefore raised a question that goes beyond the rivalry between APC factions: at a time when ordinary Nigerians are being asked to endure hardship, what message does the reported distribution of expensive luxury vehicles to party loyalists send to the public?

Hospitals struggle as political spending attracts attention

The reported vehicle distribution has also revived concerns about public priorities, particularly the condition of healthcare facilities in parts of Nigeria.

Some hospitals face shortages of essential equipment, including ambulances, hospital beds and specialised diagnostic and emergency-care facilities. These challenges have intensified calls for greater investment in healthcare infrastructure and improved access to treatment.

Against this background, the reported expenditure associated with the luxury SUVs has prompted critics to question why such substantial resources appear available for political mobilisation while citizens continue to demand better healthcare, education, security and social support.

However, the funding source for the vehicles has not been established, and there is no verified evidence that public funds were used to purchase them. The distinction is important because privately financed gifts and expenditure from public resources raise different questions of accountability.

Nevertheless, the controversy highlights the wider debate over political patronage and whether the priorities of political organisations reflect the urgent needs of the people they seek to represent.

Party loyalists complain as Nigerians question priorities

The reported distribution has also generated complaints among APC youth supporters who allegedly did not benefit from the arrangement.

Some supporters have reportedly expressed frustration over what they perceive as unequal access to opportunities and rewards within the party structure. Their grievances have added another dimension to the controversy, suggesting that the dispute involves not only rival political camps but also competition over recognition, influence and material benefits.

The situation has created an uncomfortable contrast for party loyalists who defend the administration’s economic policies while attempting to convince Nigerians that current sacrifices will eventually produce better living conditions.

Critics argue that visible displays of political privilege can undermine those efforts, particularly when citizens see reports of expensive vehicles circulating alongside appeals for patience and understanding.

For Nigerians outside the political establishment, the dispute has reinforced questions about whether political competition is being driven primarily by plans to improve living standards or by struggles for influence and access to resources.

Israel’s message fuels further debate

After reportedly deleting an earlier social media post about the vehicles, Israel published another message declaring: “You cannot follow Dayo diligently and be left stranded. It’s only a matter of time. If you are patient, your time will come.”

The statement was interpreted by some observers as a message of reassurance to his supporters that their loyalty would eventually be rewarded.

However, it has also added to the debate over the relationship between political loyalty, material rewards and the mobilisation of young people ahead of the 2027 elections.

The controversy comes as the APC prepares for another presidential contest, with youth mobilisation expected to play a significant role in its campaign strategy.

The bigger question: Whose interests come first?

Ultimately, the Prado controversy has become more than a dispute over luxury vehicles or competing political personalities. It has raised broader questions about the ruling party’s priorities at a time when many Nigerians are struggling to survive the country’s economic pressures.

The APC and the Presidency face growing calls to clarify the circumstances surrounding the reported distribution, including who financed the vehicles, how many were acquired and the basis on which beneficiaries were selected.

If the vehicles were privately funded, transparency about the arrangement could help address public concerns. If public resources were involved, Nigerians would be entitled to seek a clear account of the expenditure and its legal authorisation.

For a country battling hunger, insecurity, inadequate public services and widespread economic anxiety, the controversy presents a test of political accountability.

The fundamental issue is not simply who receives a Prado or which APC faction controls youth mobilisation. It is whether the people entrusted with political power understand the hardship facing ordinary Nigerians and are prepared to demonstrate, through their priorities and actions, that citizens’ welfare matters.
