Como will welcome Manchester United to the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on Wednesday as manager Cesc Fabregas prepares his side for a major UEFA Champions League test.

The Italian club, which has never previously competed in European football in its 119-year history, is set to host its first Champions League match against English opposition.

Como began their European campaign impressively with a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig but suffered a 3-2 defeat to Feyenoord in their second outing. Fabregas is now hoping to revive the club’s chances of reaching the knockout stage despite facing a difficult challenge.

Manchester United, meanwhile, head into the encounter struggling for consistency, having failed to win their last six matches across all competitions. The Red Devils have drawn three of their last four games, increasing pressure on manager Michael Carrick to deliver a positive result.

Fabregas acknowledged the magnitude of facing one of football’s most decorated clubs but insisted that Como would approach the contest with determination.

“It’s a great match against one of the best and biggest teams in history,” Fabregas said.

“It’s a match to dream about, but we must try to do our best to try to win and pick up the three points.”

The Como manager also admitted that competing against elite European sides would require his team to demonstrate resilience and belief, even when facing opponents with greater experience and resources.

“We slowly have to understand what it’s like to face the top sides, when you know that they’re better than you, but you still have to compete with what you have,” he added.

Fabregas said his team had gradually developed into a more organised and competitive side capable of holding its own in Italy’s demanding Serie A.

“We slowly formed a stable, solid team that could grow in Serie A, which is a very competitive league,” he said.

Despite acknowledging the difficulty of qualifying for the next stage, the Spaniard described Como’s participation in the competition as a privilege.

“We have a very tough path to qualify for the next stage, and for us it’s a pleasure to be here competing,” he added.

Manchester United will draw confidence from their historical record against Italian opposition, having lost just two of their last 16 matches against clubs from Italy, recording 10 victories during that run.

However, their recent European away form presents a concern. United have won just one of their previous 10 Champions League away fixtures, drawing three and losing six.

The encounter therefore presents an opportunity for Como to make another significant statement on their European debut, while United will be desperate to end their poor run and restore confidence under Carrick.
