NAFDAC Uncovers Suspected Fake Whisky Factory Worth Over 500m Naira in Aba
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a suspected counterfeit alcoholic drinks production facility at No. 25 Omenazu Street, Aba, Abia State.
The agency said the discovery followed credible intelligence, with officials finding the facility operating under unhygienic conditions.
According to NAFDAC, the suspected operator reportedly fled upon the arrival of its enforcement team, abandoning a vehicle containing counterfeit packaging materials bearing the names of Sir Edwards Scotch Whisky and Scottish Hills Whisky, empty bottles and a drum containing approximately 200 litres of liquid.
A search of the premises also led to the discovery of counterfeit packaging materials, bottle caps, sealing machines, empty bottles, cartons, tanks containing various liquid mixtures and dirty sieves allegedly used in the production process.
Officials further found plastic buckets and 200-litre drums containing ethanol, as well as tree bark immersed in ethanol, raising concerns about the safety, quality and composition of the suspected products.
NAFDAC estimated the value of the equipment, materials and other components of the facility at more than ₦500 million.
The discovery has raised fresh concerns about the potential health risks associated with counterfeit alcoholic beverages and the activities of illegal manufacturers who may expose consumers to unsafe products.
The agency urged members of the public to provide credible information about suspected illegal manufacturing activities to support its enforcement efforts.
NAFDAC continues to warn against the production and distribution of unregistered and counterfeit regulated products, urging consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing alcoholic beverages.
