Sanwo-Olu Pledges Lagos Support for 2026 All Africa Ladies Golf Championship
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged his administration’s support for the successful hosting of the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT), a continental ladies’ golf championship scheduled to take place in Abuja.
The biennial tournament will hold from November 2 to 7 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, bringing together female golfers from 30 African countries to compete for their respective nations.
Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by a delegation of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN), led by its patron and Iyalode of Lagos, Chief Bintu-Fatima Tinubu.
The governor commended the association for its efforts to promote women’s participation in sports and enhance Africa’s image on the international stage.
He expressed enthusiasm for the forthcoming championship and assured the association of the Lagos State Government’s support towards its successful hosting.
Sanwo-Olu also emphasised the importance of integrity, ethical conduct and adherence to established standards, urging individuals and organisations to uphold these values in their professional and personal endeavours.
He encouraged people to embrace new opportunities and pursue meaningful goals regardless of age, stressing that it is never too late to make a positive impact.
Speaking earlier, LGAN President, Dr Lami Ahmed, disclosed that the championship had received endorsements from the National Sports Commission, relevant Senate and House of Representatives committees, and other stakeholders.
Ahmed also said the First Lady had endorsed the event and agreed to participate in its opening and closing ceremonies.
She explained that Nigeria secured the hosting rights following a successful bid in Morocco, describing the championship as an opportunity to strengthen the country’s international reputation, promote tourism, attract investment and stimulate economic growth.
According to her, golf also offers opportunities to promote discipline, integrity, professional training and leadership among women.
The association president commended ongoing efforts to advance women’s empowerment and development, noting that the championship would provide a platform to showcase Nigerian hospitality and strengthen sporting ties among African countries.
The 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy is expected to bring together athletes and stakeholders from across the continent, offering Nigeria an opportunity to promote women’s golf and deepen its engagement with the international sporting community.
